What to know
What to know
Your thyroid hormones are involved in many bodily functions, so when these hormones are imbalanced, you may experience symptoms. These symptoms change based on whether your thyroid hormone levels are too high or too low.
Hypothyroidism (also known as an underactive thyroid) occurs when the thyroid does not produce enough thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
Symptoms of an underactive thyroid can include:
Tiredness
Being sensitive to cold
Weight gain
Constipation
Depression
Dry and scaly skin
Brittle hair and nails
Irregular periods or heavy periods
Slow heart rate
Hyperthyroidism (known as an overactive thyroid) is when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Symptoms of an overactive thyroid can include:
Nervousness, anxiety and irritability
Persistent tiredness and weakness
Sensitivity to heat
Swelling in your neck from an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter)
An irregular and/or unusually fast heart rate (palpitations)
Weight loss
Please talk to your healthcare provider about any concerns or symptoms. This is especially important if you experience any severe or sudden symptoms.
Your sample must be collected in the morning, on a Monday-Thursday, and returned on the same day.
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), or thyrotropin, is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. TSH tells the thyroid gland to produce your thyroid hormones. These are called FT3 and FT4 or T3 and T4.
Free Triiodothyronine (FT3)
FT3 (also known as T3) is one of the two thyroid hormones. FT3 helps control your metabolism, which is when your body breaks down food into energy.
Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPO/TPEX)
TPO/TPEX points to whether your thyroid may have been damaged by your immune system not functioning as it should.

Free Thyroxine (FT4)
FT4 (also known as T4) is another type of thyroid hormone. After being released by your thyroid, it is converted into FT3 by cells in your body. Therefore, it also impacts your metabolism.
Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TGAB)
Your TGAB result points to whether your thyroid may have been damaged by your immune system not functioning as it should.
Thyroxine (T4)
Thyroxine (T4) is one of two major hormones produced by the thyroid gland. It is required to regulate metabolism. T4 is found in two different forms, bound to proteins, or free (unbound) in the bloodstream. Protein bound T4 cannot enter the cells of the body for use in metabolism. Free thyroxine (FT4) is biologically active and readily available for use by the body.
